Basic Grammar : Compound Sentence

ความหมาย

ประโยคความรวม คือการนำ ประโยคความเดียว (Independent clause) ตั้งแต่ 2 ประโยคขึ้นไปมาเชื่อมกัน เพื่อให้เนื้อหาละเอียดและชัดเจนขึ้น โดยแต่ละประโยคสามารถอยู่เดี่ยว ๆ ได้และมีความหมายสมบูรณ์

วิธีสร้างประโยคความรวม

1) ใช้เครื่องหมาย semicolon (;)

• เชื่อม 2 ประโยคที่มีความสัมพันธ์กัน
• ตัวอย่าง:
  The road was blocked; the transport stopped.

2) ใช้คำเชื่อม (Conjunction) + comma

• วาง comma ก่อนคำเชื่อม
• ตัวอย่าง:
  It rained heavily, so the road flooded.

ประเภทคำเชื่อม

1) Coordinate Conjunction (คำเชื่อมเดี่ยว )

มี 7 คำ:

• and = เพิ่มข้อมูล (ไปทางเดียวกัน)
• nor = และไม่ (ใช้กับประโยคปฏิเสธ + โครงสร้างคล้ายคำถาม)
• but / yet = แต่ (ขัดแย้งกัน)
• or = มิฉะนั้น / ให้เลือก
• so = ดังนั้น (ผลลัพธ์)
• for = เพราะ (ให้เหตุผลเสริม แต่ไม่ใช้ตอบ why)

ตัวอย่าง:
She was tired, but she kept working.

2) Correlative Conjunction (คำเชื่อมคู่)

ต้องใช้เป็นคู่เสมอ:

• both...and = ทั้ง...และ
• either...or = อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง
• neither...nor = ไม่ทั้งคู่ (โครงสร้างคล้ายคำถาม)
• not only...but also = ไม่เพียง...แต่ยัง

ตัวอย่าง:
Not only did he study hard, but he also passed the exam.

3) Conjunctive Adverbs (คำเชื่อมแบบทางการ)

ใช้ในภาษาเขียนมาก มักมีรูปแบบ: ; + คำเชื่อม + ,

กลุ่มสำคัญ:

• เพิ่มข้อมูล: besides, moreover, furthermore
• ขัดแย้ง: however, nevertheless
• ผลลัพธ์: therefore, thus, as a result
• ตัวอย่าง: for example
• เปรียบเทียบ: similarly, likewise
• ทางเลือก: otherwise

ตัวอย่าง:
He studied hard; therefore, he succeeded.

สิ่งสำคัญที่ต้องจำ

• ต้องเชื่อม Independent clause เท่านั้น
• มักมี comma ก่อนคำเชื่อม
• โครงสร้างบางคำ (เช่น nor, neither...nor, not only...) ต้อง สลับรูปเป็นแบบคำถาม
• but กับ yet ใช้แทนกันได้
• for ≠ because (ใช้ตอบ why ไม่ได้)

• She likes coffee, but he prefers tea.
• He didn’t study; therefore, he failed.
